Interview: Paige Young Talks Music And All Things Fashion

Already hailed with praises from the likes of Akon, A$AP, Wacka Flocka to name a few, read below as I caught up with one of the UK’s freshest songbirds, the sensational Paige Young!

You’ve been singing from the get go it seems, when was the point where you felt ‘This is what
I want to do for the rest of my life!’?
I started doing musical theatre when I was younger, I began dancing, singing and acting and as I performed in lots of shows on bigger stages each time, I quickly realised I wanna do this for the rest of my life. I went to musical theatre from the age of 11, and by the time I was 18, every single one of my teachers said I should get into recording! So I went to Point Blank in Islington just to be around people, get involved. I took a course there and recorded my first few tracks, which listening back to my earliest material sounds awful now….(laughs) but at the time I thought they were amazing!

Who has influenced your sound and how would you describe it yourself?
Well, I grew up on Michael Jackson, but I’m into the more urban stuff like Beyoncé, Rihanna, Miley Cyrus all of that. I listen to what’s now as that’s very me. As for my sound, I’m a new artist, trying to discover my way in without trying to be anyone. What’s come naturally to me is very pop, urban, cool, gritty and expressive music.

The UKs sexiest new songbird, Paige Young | Interview

You’ve worked with some of the biggest songwriters out there such as Tiago (Universal), Ben Harrison (Roc Nation) and Briss (EMI). How has that been like?
Yeah, it’s been amazing. I’ve been so lucky to work with who are really high up in the industry and know what they are talking about on things. I’ve learnt a lot by being around people like that. I’ve had a chance to see how people write, how they produce. I’ve been around really talented people and it’s been really fun!

Your latest single, ‘Wait’ which we’ve featured on the site previously was given it the Beatz Mag
seal of approval! What was the concept behind the track all about?
The song is about a guy being unsure whether he could commit to the real deal. We were going back and forth and so the song developed about heartbreak and emotions and what you get from a relationship. I think a lot of young girls and guys can relate to that. It’s quite an emotional track for me because a lot of people will eventually go through that situation unfortunately.

You look gorgeous today, how do you explore your keen interest in fashion through your music?

I’m obsessed with heels. I don’t ever think you’ll find me without heels (because I am really small)! I’m always in 6inch heels! I’ve got a strong vision where I want to portray fashion through my music and things. I like being edgy and mixing various looks together, so I’ll mix an Addidas tee and heels! I don’t like any brands that are ridiculously expensive, you can do so much with the high street brands like Topshop, H&M, River Island and all their accessories.

In terms of producers; working with the likes of ADP, Tiago, Music Kids, Knox Brown and others there’s bound to be an evolution of sound, so the pop/urban is going to naturally progress, like other contemporary artists have progressed their sound. Can you see that happening to your own sound?

Yeah I think so, I’d like everything to make sense. I’m constantly evolving!
