How To Find Your FLAWLESS Foundation

The Right Foundation

Finding the right foundation can be really tricky and it’s always a bit of a journey.

To begin, you hear about this “really great brand”, after all that chatter you usually find a brand you like the sound of… after your own extensive online research. Your friends then give you tons of advice even though it might not be suitable for your skin type, you eventually pop into a store feeling like a complete novice and find the sales assistant is a bit *meh* , so you don’t ask too many questions, you take what’s given and you run out!!

Sound familiar?!

I used to be like that and I’d often leave with foundation that was too light, too dark or just made me a weird off brown colour lol…ah those old days…

Knowing Your Skin – Skin Type Test:

Using this simple trick, I took the time to understand what my skin was like.

Wash your face as you do everyday, pat dry (air dry – which ever suits you) and go about your evening (I would do this at home). Your body produces natural oils, which get stripped whenever you wash your face, so as your  PH balance restores itself – pay attention to your skin’s restoration.

  • Is it “normal” – as if you had applied some of your normal moisturiser?
  • Is it “oily” everywhere or just in some places?
  • Is it “dry” and in desperate need of moisture? Or is it just dry in places?
  • Is it “combination” – you seem to have an oily T zone and the rest is either normal or dry?

Did any of those types apply to you?  If so, that’s your skin type.

This simple trick helped me figure out I had combination skin and that in winter, my skin gets really dry. It helped guide my choice in skin care (face washes, moisturisers, toners etc) and of course in foundation.

Below are my go to’s for foundations. They suit my budget, are easy to find and give me the finish I want. As I have combination skin, I tend to go for matte foundations or find ways to end up with a matte finish using a powder with my foundation. The mattifying elements of the foundations  help control my shine and if I need a boost, I’ll use a powder throughout the day (normally Heat from Nars or Dark Deep from Mac Cosmetics)
